Software Defined Networking (SDN) with MikroTik

The legacy network has just about run its last mile, advancements in cloud computing, virtualization and datacenters have led to an exponential growth in data traffic that will soon over-power legacy networks. Software Defined Networks (SDN) is a new networking paradigm in which there is separation of the forwarding and control planes. The control is migrated to a separate entity called the SDN Controller, Leaving the forwarding plane with bare-metal and virtual switches (switches devoid of control logic) to carry out packet forwarding. Allows external applications to program the network via an Application Programmable Interface (API). The most popular SD protocol is OpenFlow. OpenvSwitch (OvS) is the most widely used OpenFlow switch.

Service Performance testing on ROS as ITU-T Y.1564 standard.

ITU-T Y.1564 test procedure Bandwidth CIR (Committed Information Rate) / EIR (Excess Information Rate)/Overshoot traffic, Frame Loss, Frame Delay and Frame Delay Variation are measured and compared to the expected values for each service ensuring it is within its committed range or the threshold defined for guaranteed traffic such as CIR for Complete validation of Ethernet Service-Level Agreements (SLAs) in a single test.

MikroTik Hotspot Implementation in a Campus Environment

This presentation will explain how to integrate MikroTik Hotspot with RADIUS and LDPA in a campus network (Khonkaen university) and this is my experience how to handle active 20k-30k concurrent users per day with MikroTik RouterOS.

Monitoring the Internet Connections of WAN Links with Only Routing Configuration

Nowadays, an approach using the Netwatch tool to monitor the Internet connections of WAN links has been very popular in Thailand. This approach has been used to solve a failover problem that does not switch over to other Internet-accessible WAN link when one WAN link’s state from a MikroTik router to the connected Internet Service Provider (ISP) is not down but the Internet cannot be accessible due to any possible problem behind the ISP. By means of the approach, the Netwatch tool is used to periodically check a remote host in the Internet using PING packets as well as scripting in both the up and down states of the WAN link is needed to disable and enable the default route of the WAN link. However, this presentation describes an alternative approach to provide the same result without using the Netwatch tool and knowing the scripting at all. Thanks to the website “wiki.mikrotik.com” that provide useful information about this approach. This approach can be simply done by configuring only routes in the route table (i.e. the Route List window in the WinBox program). This approach is presented in both scenarios: (1) one remote host per WAN link and (2) more than one remote host per WAN link. Moreover this presentation demonstrates the use of this approach in the MikroTik router devices as well.

Load Balance PCC on Unbalanced Internet Connection with QoS Support

Many network engineer try to do PCC Load Balance but the Internet is not always come with the same speed and bandwidth such as 200/50Mbps working with 30/10 Mbps

How can we setup PCC Load balance to work with Qos to help average and share bandwidth between client.
