Top Ten RouterOS HowTo Questions

Having used MikroTik RouterOS for more than seventeen years, I can tell you that without a doubt, there are several common questions that seem to resurface on a regular basis. In spite of what I would describe as a very complete manual on the MikroTik wiki, "How do I do this or that” is repeated time and time again such as “How do I forward a port” or “How do I back up my configuration". This presentation will take the top ten Google search terms that include "MikroTik HowTo" and explain each feature in a step by step manner. Some of these functions are basic, yet these are the things most people are searching for.

Accessing Geolocked content the easy way

Greg demonstrates a simple way to access Geolocked content using VPN tunnels and short scripts. This is great for switching where a media device is sourced from for accessing streaming video.

ISP Design: Using a full table route reflector to improve eBGP performance with MikroTik routers

This presentation will focus on how to design the eBGP border of an ISP using a full table route reflector to improve the performance of MIkroTik routers that are handling three or more full BGP global tables. The design will review the use of a full table route reflector to peer the border routers into and improve the speed of convergence as well as provide a way to scale the border of the network.

TheBrothersWISP Panel on Routing

This is an "Ask Me Anything" style panel focused on MikroTik routing and ancillary services. Have your questions ready, and we will do our best at answering them.

Analyzing RouterOS attack vectors and how to protect your network

The presentation is a deep-dive into attack vectors and attack techniques utilised by the large wave of attacks on MikroTik devices during the year 2018. We analyse the RouterOS exploits that utilized Vault7, WinBox client-side and WinBox server-side vulnerabilities. How were the attacks performed? What did the attackers do with the exploited routers? What was the impact and the spread of the attacks? Finally, we will talk about security, and how to protect yourself from exploits like these in the future by analyzing what should have been done by network administrators to prevent these exploits.

Bandwidth Control

Bandwidth control options using MikroTik devices

MikroTik, BGP and Internet Exchanges

What is an IX? Connecting to an IX Route Servers vs direct peering Full routes, vs IX routes, vs transit BGP tuning Local Pref Med MikroTik filter chains Communities and marking traffic Example configs on MikroTik BGP design ideas

VRRP Implementation

You will find out how easy to use Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol in MikroTik to provides an automatic assignment of available IP routers to participating hosts for increases the availability and reliability of routing paths.

Playing with RouterOS's VLANs

RouterOS allows you to work with VLANs in different ways. In software, in the switch chip and in bridges. This presentation will try to cover the pros/cons of these approaches and to show some tips.

Understanding throughput

Lets talk about MikroTik device throughput, how one should test it, what are the most common misunderstandings and how to improve the numbers

Understanding the Concepts of Traffic Control

Learn how to use Traffic Control to ensure critical traffic throughput times of congestion and fair bandwidth distribution to end users. Learn the fundamental concepts of Traffic Control: Classifying, Scheduling, Shaping HTB and Bursting.

Experiences with 60GHz in an urban environment

Experiences with 60GHz in an urban environment

CASE STUDY: Simple Example of using MikroTik for DOCSIS provisioning

How to use MikroTik routers to provide cost effective DOCSIS provisioning in small to medium size cable modem deployments.

How to get started with IPv6

This is a quick, practical guide on how to start with IPv6. How to get your IPv6 prefix, and what you should route to customers/businesses etc. We will talk about subnet sizes, as well as how to issue prefixes to customers, and customers of customers as well. If you are interested in starting with IPv6, then this is the session for you.

Maximizing your wireless link

How to leverage MikroTik wireless features to get the best performance from your wireless link. This presentation will take a look at both the wireless characteristics as well as the settings needed to get optimal performance.

ISP Design - Using a MikroTik CHR For Highly Available IPv4/IPv6 PPPoE Aggregation

In this presentation we will discuss using a MIkroTik CHR as a highly available PPPoE aggregation solution. Using IPv4 and IPv6 we will explore how to design and configure multiple CHR's so that PPPoE sessions can be load balanced across two or more VM's. We will also explore how this solution helps with scaling resources for rapidly growing subscriber counts.
